Tuule Sports Hall

Sports hall for the Rae Gymnasium

Tuule Sports Hall and Rae Gymnasium form a unified complex, designed to provide seamless functionality while blending harmoniously with the surrounding environment. The architectural design prioritizes accessibility and a low-profile structure to complement the adjacent school building. All rooms, except for the spectator stands, are situated on the ground floor, creating a single-level layout that ensures easy access and usability for all visitors. This approach results in a modest building volume that does not overshadow the school complex, maintaining a balanced and unobtrusive presence.

The main entrance to the sports hall is strategically located in the southwestern corner of the building, ensuring smooth connectivity with the parking lot and nearby bus stop. This thoughtful positioning allows for efficient flow of visitors, whether arriving by car or public transport. The taller section of the building, which houses the main sports hall for ball games, is positioned on the northern side of the structure. This arrangement minimizes the visual impact of the higher volume while optimizing interior functionality. The southern side of the building accommodates locker rooms, maintaining a logical division of spaces and easy accessibility for athletes and visitors alike.

A notable feature of the design is the orientation of the gym and aerobics hall, which open onto a green park area. This intentional connection to the outdoor space creates a refreshing environment for physical activity, enhancing the overall user experience. The integration of indoor and outdoor areas not only promotes an active lifestyle but also encourages a sense of harmony with nature.

The construction of Tuule Sports Hall primarily utilizes wood, emphasizing sustainability and the aesthetic qualities of natural materials. Glued laminated timber (glulam) serves as the primary structural material for the halls, showcasing innovative engineering and design. The wooden framework is complemented by the use of stone walls in wet areas, ensuring durability and practicality where moisture resistance is essential. The prominent use of timber in visible areas imbues the interior spaces with warmth and character, creating an inviting and visually pleasing atmosphere.

The main sports hall is equipped to accommodate a variety of ball games and features a seating capacity of approximately 160 spectators. The design of the hall emphasizes functionality, with ample natural light and thoughtful acoustic treatments to enhance the usability of the space. The glued laminated timber beams used in the construction are not only structurally efficient but also contribute to the aesthetic appeal, adding a sense of craftsmanship to the interior.

Beyond the main hall, the facility includes a state-of-the-art gym and an aerobics studio, both outfitted with modern equipment and designed for versatility. These spaces cater to a wide range of activities, from strength training to group fitness classes. The aerobics studio is particularly noteworthy for its adaptability, doubling as an extension of the gym area for stretching and relaxation.

Accessibility has been a central focus throughout the design process. Tuule Sports Hall is equipped with features that accommodate individuals with special needs, ensuring that the facility is inclusive and welcoming to all members of the community. Solutions for visually and hearing-impaired users have been thoughtfully integrated, and the ground-floor layout eliminates barriers for those with mobility challenges.

The exterior design of Tuule Sports Hall is characterized by clean lines and a modern aesthetic that aligns with its functionality. The use of natural materials, such as wood, creates a connection to the surrounding landscape, while the overall form of the building maintains a sense of modesty and balance. The integration of green spaces around the facility further enhances its environmental credentials, creating a pleasant and sustainable setting.

Opened in 2024, Tuule Sports Hall has already garnered recognition for its architectural and engineering achievements. The innovative use of glued laminated timber in the construction has been particularly praised, earning the facility a special award in the field of timber architecture.
